Urgent Action Alert: Contact Senators to Urge Their Votes Against the Congressional Budget Bill and Medicaid/Medicare Cuts

NASW is asking all social workers to contact U.S. senators to tell them to vote NO on any version of the U.S. Senate’s budget reconciliation bill that would cut key programs such as Medicaid, Medicare, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, and other life-saving programs.

A vote is expected anytime, so please don’t delay! Reach out to your Senators TODAY and add a personalized message via NASW’s editable email template.

Following the destructive lead of the House of Representatives, this bill would decimate programs that enable American families to meet basic needs, access the means of economic mobility, and participate in society. The bill trades the health and well-being of a majority of families to pay for tax breaks for a wealthy few.

These devastating cuts to health care and food assistance programs will have dire impacts on individuals, families, and communities.

Congress is using a legislative tool called “reconciliation” to accomplish its goals. This procedure expedites the process for legislation focused on spending, revenue, and debt-limit laws. The risky path was chosen because it rushes budget-focused bills through the Senate with a simple majority vote, avoiding any filibuster.

Currently, Republicans have only razor-thin majorities in both congressional chambers, so they can use this congressional session to advance President Trump's extremist agenda. In a time when families are struggling to put food on the table, grappling with rising health care costs, dealing with high college tuition and dwindling options for student loan repayment, and other financial hardships, Congress is working overtime to ram the bill through this expedited process.

Make no mistake—passage of this bill would irreparably harm nearly every family and individual in America.

Advocacy is social work. Please join NASW in our fight to protect crucial programs from dangerous cuts. Contact your Senators today.
