Virginia Executive Director Debra Riggs joined three other NASW chapter leaders on an NASW panel May 16 about progress in advancing the Social Work Licensure Compact. With nearly 100 social workers in the webinar, Riggs answered questions and talked about the state’s journey toward its Virginia General Assembly passage and ultimate signature by Gov. Youngkin April 8.
Virginia was the sixth of a necessary seven signatories, and since April, the number of signatories has risen to 14, with more sign-ons expected soon. Once seven signatories were attained, a Compact Commission could be created to develop governance guidance. The group will likely meet this fall. When the system for reciprocity is approved, Virginia social workers can begin applying to practice in other signatory states.
