NASW-VA SUPPORTS THE DREAM ACT
The Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act provides hope for an estimated 65,000 undocumented youth who graduate from high school each year having grown up in the United States for most of their lives.
Under the DREAM Act, those who entered the country before age 16 and are under age 35 can petition for citizenship if they have a high school diploma or GED, good moral character (no criminal record) and five years of continuous presence in the US prior to the passage of the bill. Once these criteria are met, applicants will then have six years of conditional lawful permanent residency during which they must obtain a two-year college degree or complete two years of military service. At the 6-year mark, DREAM Act beneficiaries would have the opportunity to petition for the removal of their conditional status and can proceed to apply for naturalization.
